“The 13 ½ foot replica of an elephant was purchase by Desert Isle owner Arby Alper from Walt Disney. Disney originally planned it for Disneyland. It allegedly cost over $8000 to build and it’s suppose to wiggle and roar. Alper doesn’t have it set up for movement or sound as yet but when he does it’ll be the wildest, moving-sound display in town.” – Murray Hertz, Las Vegas Review Journal, 1/14/1964
“My parents owned the Desert Isle. We bought it early in 1955 and owned it for about 20 years … It was my dad that acquired a grey elephant and painted it pink. It was originally made for Disney but they did not buy it so my dad was able to purchase it from the manufacturing company. It had the mechanisms to move but it was never used.” – Susan Vermillion-Mugge
